Apprentice to Master
Ever want to learn something new? Ever had the chance to teach something you love to someone else? When do you shift from the learner to the teacher, the follower to the leader, the player to the coach?
Today it happened for my youngest son. It was SO fun to watch him run into open gym with his older brother this afternoon. He confidently entered the gym and for the first time, was able to teach his big brother all kinds of things he knew how to do that his big brother had never experienced.
First, they sprinted to the rings that are hung so high, you must climb stairs to reach them. He skillfully grabbed the rings and did his swings, then fell into the fluffy ball pit, as his brother soaked up the moves. As his brother took his turn, he coached him from the mat. Both of them were beaming when he was able to swing correctly! Success!
Next up, the trampoline. This is a monster trampoline. It is as long as the length of the building. I smiled as they bounced past, with my youngest in the LEAD and his brother on his heels. They bounced and bounced. Then my youngest took off down the trampoline like an airplane zipping down the tarmac. He leapt on the springboard and soared in the air like a football launched by the quarterback. He flipped in the air and landed on the cushy mat. Next up, his big brother. What would he do? With his personal coach bro, he also blazed down the mat, hit the ramp, and launched, jumping on the mat, no flip. Again and again they repeated the sequence and then, to my amazement (and after many failed attempts), he left scorch marks as he soared into the air and FLIPPED! They were both delighted, I am not sure which one of the two was the happiest! Their faces said it all.
I just want to bottle up this afternoon. Teach someone to do something and both people win!
That is passion! That is leadership! That is patience! That is learning!
They both came panting up to the parent observation deck.
“Wasn’t that the funnest time of your life?” my youngest said.
“It was up there,” said his brother. “There is a lot I don’t know.”
